ٱذْهَبْ إِلَىٰ فِرْعَوْنَ إِنَّهُۥ طَغَىٰ ١٧
79:17 | "Go to Pharaoh. Indeed, he has transgressed.
فَقُلْ هَل لَّكَ إِلَىٰٓ أَن تَزَكَّىٰ ١٨
79:18 | And say to him, 'Would you [be willing to] purify yourself
وَأَهْدِيَكَ إِلَىٰ رَبِّكَ فَتَخْشَىٰ ١٩
79:19 | And let me guide you to your Lord so you would fear [Him]?'"
فَأَرَىٰهُ ٱلْـَٔايَةَ ٱلْكُبْرَىٰ ٢٠
79:20 | And he showed him the greatest sign, ¹

i.e., the miracle of his staff becoming a great snake.
فَكَذَّبَ وَعَصَىٰ ٢١
79:21 | But he [i.e., Pharaoh] denied and disobeyed.
ثُمَّ أَدْبَرَ يَسْعَىٰ ٢٢
79:22 | Then he turned his back, striving [i.e., plotting]. ¹

An alternative meaning is "running [from the snake]."
فَحَشَرَ فَنَادَىٰ ٢٣
79:23 | And he gathered [his people] and called out.
فَقَالَ أَنَا۠ رَبُّكُمُ ٱلْأَعْلَىٰ ٢٤
79:24 | And said, "I am your most exalted lord."
فَأَخَذَهُ ٱللَّهُ نَكَالَ ٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ وَٱلْأُولَىٰٓ ٢٥
79:25 | So Allāh seized him in exemplary punishment for the last and the first [transgression]. ¹.

i.e., for Pharaoh's setting himself up as a deity and for his previous oppression of the people and denial of Moses.
إِنَّ فِى ذَٰلِكَ لَعِبْرَةًۭ لِّمَن يَخْشَىٰٓ ٢٦
79:26 | Indeed in that is a lesson [i.e., warning] for whoever would fear [Allāh].
ءَأَنتُمْ أَشَدُّ خَلْقًا أَمِ ٱلسَّمَآءُ ۚ بَنَىٰهَا ٢٧
79:27 | Are you a more difficult creation or is the heaven? He [i.e., Allāh] constructed it.
رَفَعَ سَمْكَهَا فَسَوَّىٰهَا ٢٨
79:28 | He raised its ceiling and proportioned it.
وَأَغْطَشَ لَيْلَهَا وَأَخْرَجَ ضُحَىٰهَا ٢٩
79:29 | And He darkened its night and extracted its brightness. ¹

i.e., created the day from within the surrounding darkness.
وَٱلْأَرْضَ بَعْدَ ذَٰلِكَ دَحَىٰهَآ ٣٠
79:30 | And after that He spread the earth.
أَخْرَجَ مِنْهَا مَآءَهَا وَمَرْعَىٰهَا ٣١
79:31 | He extracted from it its water and its pasture,
وَٱلْجِبَالَ أَرْسَىٰهَا ٣٢
79:32 | And the mountains He set firmly
مَتَـٰعًۭا لَّكُمْ وَلِأَنْعَـٰمِكُمْ ٣٣
79:33 | As enjoyment [i.e., provision] for you and your grazing livestock.
فَإِذَا جَآءَتِ ٱلطَّآمَّةُ ٱلْكُبْرَىٰ ٣٤
79:34 | But when there comes the greatest Overwhelming Calamity ¹ -

i.e., the Day of Resurrection.
يَوْمَ يَتَذَكَّرُ ٱلْإِنسَـٰنُ مَا سَعَىٰ ٣٥
79:35 | The Day when man will remember that for which he strove,
وَبُرِّزَتِ ٱلْجَحِيمُ لِمَن يَرَىٰ ٣٦
79:36 | And Hellfire will be exposed for [all] those who see -
فَأَمَّا مَن طَغَىٰ ٣٧
79:37 | So as for he who transgressed
وَءَاثَرَ ٱلْحَيَوٰةَ ٱلدُّنْيَا ٣٨
79:38 | And preferred the life of the world,
فَإِنَّ ٱلْجَحِيمَ هِىَ ٱلْمَأْوَىٰ ٣٩
79:39 | Then indeed, Hellfire will be [his] refuge.
وَأَمَّا مَنْ خَافَ مَقَامَ رَبِّهِۦ وَنَهَى ٱلنَّفْسَ عَنِ ٱلْهَوَىٰ ٤٠
79:40 | But as for he who feared the position of his Lord ¹ and prevented the soul from [unlawful] inclination,

An alternative meaning is "the standing [for account] before his Lord."
فَإِنَّ ٱلْجَنَّةَ هِىَ ٱلْمَأْوَىٰ ٤١
79:41 | Then indeed, Paradise will be [his] refuge.
يَسْـَٔلُونَكَ عَنِ ٱلسَّاعَةِ أَيَّانَ مُرْسَىٰهَا ٤٢
79:42 | They ask you, [O Muḥammad], about the Hour: when is its arrival? ¹

Literally, "resting" or "establishment."
فِيمَ أَنتَ مِن ذِكْرَىٰهَآ ٤٣
79:43 | In what [position] are you that you should mention it? ¹
Footnote 79:43 (1):🅧
Meaning that Muḥammad (ﷺ) had no knowledge of it, so how could he inform them?
إِلَىٰ رَبِّكَ مُنتَهَىٰهَآ ٤٤
Footnote 79:44 (1):🅧
i.e., its destination and termination. And to Him belongs ultimate knowledge of it.
إِنَّمَآ أَنتَ مُنذِرُ مَن يَخْشَىٰهَا ٤٥
79:45 | You are only a warner for those who fear it.
كَأَنَّهُمْ يَوْمَ يَرَوْنَهَا لَمْ يَلْبَثُوٓا۟ إِلَّا عَشِيَّةً أَوْ ضُحَىٰهَا ٤٦
79:46 | It will be, on the Day they see it, ¹ as though they had not remained [in the world] except for an afternoon or a morning thereof.

i.e., the Hour, the Resurrection.
