فَلَمَّا رَأَوْهُ زُلْفَةًۭ سِيٓـَٔتْ وُجُوهُ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ وَقِيلَ هَـٰذَا ٱلَّذِى كُنتُم بِهِۦ تَدَّعُونَ ٢٧
67:27 | But when they see it ¹ approaching, the faces of those who disbelieve will be distressed, and it will be said, "This is that for which you used to call." ²

When they challenged their prophets, saying, "Bring on the punishment, if you are truthful."
قُلْ أَرَءَيْتُمْ إِنْ أَهْلَكَنِىَ ٱللَّهُ وَمَن مَّعِىَ أَوْ رَحِمَنَا فَمَن يُجِيرُ ٱلْكَـٰفِرِينَ مِنْ عَذَابٍ أَلِيمٍۢ ٢٨
67:28 | Say, [O Muḥammad], "Have you considered: ¹ whether Allāh should cause my death and those with me or have mercy upon us, who can protect the disbelievers from a painful punishment?"

i.e., inform me.
قُلْ هُوَ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنُ ءَامَنَّا بِهِۦ وَعَلَيْهِ تَوَكَّلْنَا ۖ فَسَتَعْلَمُونَ مَنْ هُوَ فِى ضَلَـٰلٍۢ مُّبِينٍۢ ٢٩
67:29 | Say, "He is the Most Merciful; we have believed in Him, and upon Him we have relied. And you will [come to] know who it is that is in clear error."
قُلْ أَرَءَيْتُمْ إِنْ أَصْبَحَ مَآؤُكُمْ غَوْرًۭا فَمَن يَأْتِيكُم بِمَآءٍۢ مَّعِينٍۭ ٣٠
67:30 | Say, "Have you considered: if your water was to become sunken [into the earth], then who could bring you flowing water?"

نٓ ۚ وَٱلْقَلَمِ وَمَا يَسْطُرُونَ ١
68:1 | Nūn. ¹ By the pen and what they inscribe,

These are among the fourteen opening letters which occur in various combinations at the beginning of twenty-nine sūrahs in the Qur’ān. Although there has been much speculation as to their meaning, it was not, in fact, revealed by Allāh to anyone and is known only to Him.
مَآ أَنتَ بِنِعْمَةِ رَبِّكَ بِمَجْنُونٍۢ ٢
68:2 | You are not, [O Muḥammad], by the favor of your Lord, a madman.
وَإِنَّ لَكَ لَأَجْرًا غَيْرَ مَمْنُونٍۢ ٣
68:3 | And indeed, for you is a reward uninterrupted.
وَإِنَّكَ لَعَلَىٰ خُلُقٍ عَظِيمٍۢ ٤
68:4 | And indeed, you are of a great moral character.
فَسَتُبْصِرُ وَيُبْصِرُونَ ٥
68:5 | So you will see and they will see.
بِأَييِّكُمُ ٱلْمَفْتُونُ ٦
68:6 | Which of you is the afflicted [by a devil].
إِنَّ رَبَّكَ هُوَ أَعْلَمُ بِمَن ضَلَّ عَن سَبِيلِهِۦ وَهُوَ أَعْلَمُ بِٱلْمُهْتَدِينَ ٧
68:7 | Indeed, your Lord is most knowing of who has gone astray from His way, and He is most knowing of the [rightly] guided.
فَلَا تُطِعِ ٱلْمُكَذِّبِينَ ٨
68:8 | Then do not obey the deniers.
وَدُّوا۟ لَوْ تُدْهِنُ فَيُدْهِنُونَ ٩
68:9 | They wish that you would soften [in your position], so they would soften [toward you].
وَلَا تُطِعْ كُلَّ حَلَّافٍۢ مَّهِينٍ ١٠
68:10 | And do not obey every worthless habitual swearer
هَمَّازٍۢ مَّشَّآءٍۭ بِنَمِيمٍۢ ١١
68:11 | [And] scorner, going about with malicious gossip -
مَّنَّاعٍۢ لِّلْخَيْرِ مُعْتَدٍ أَثِيمٍ ١٢
68:12 | A preventer of good, transgressing and sinful,
عُتُلٍّۭ بَعْدَ ذَٰلِكَ زَنِيمٍ ١٣
68:13 | Cruel, moreover, and an illegitimate pretender. ¹

i.e., claiming a particular lineage falsely. The description given in these verses is of al-Waleed bin al-Mugheerah (see also 74:11-25) or possibly, as asserted by Ibn Katheer, al-Akhnas bin Shurayq.
أَن كَانَ ذَا مَالٍۢ وَبَنِينَ ١٤
68:14 | Because he is a possessor of wealth and children,
إِذَا تُتْلَىٰ عَلَيْهِ ءَايَـٰتُنَا قَالَ أَسَـٰطِيرُ ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ ١٥
68:15 | When Our verses are recited to him, he says, "Legends of the former peoples."
سَنَسِمُهُۥ عَلَى ٱلْخُرْطُومِ ١٦
68:16 | We will brand him upon the snout. ¹

Literally, "trunk," meaning the nose of an elephant or pig.
