13:1 | Alif, Lām, Meem, Rā. ¹ These are the verses of the Book; and what has been revealed to you from your Lord is the truth, but most of the people do not believe.
Footnote 13:1 (1):🅧
These are among the fourteen opening letters which occur in various combinations at the beginning of twenty-nine sūrahs in the Qur’ān. Although there has been much speculation as to their meaning, it was not, in fact, revealed by Allāh to anyone and is known only to Him.
13:2 | It is Allāh who erected the heavens without pillars that you [can] see; then He established Himself above the Throne ¹ and made subject ² the sun and the moon, each running [its course] for a specified term. He arranges [each] matter; He details the signs that you may, of the meeting with your Lord, be certain.
Footnote 13:2 (1):🅧
(Allāh states in the Qur’ān that He has certain attributes such as hearing, sight, hands, face, mercy, anger, coming, encompassing, being above the Throne, etc. Yet, He has disassociated Himself from the limitations of human attributes or human imagination. Correct Islāmic belief requires faith in the existence of these attributes as Allāh has described them without applying to them any allegorical meanings or attempting to explain how a certain quality could be (while this is known only to Allāh) and without comparing them to creation or denying that He (subḥānahu wa taʿālā) would have such a quality. His attributes are befitting to Him alone, and "There is nothing like unto Him.") and (There are several linguistic meanings of the words 'istawā ʿalā,' among them: to settle upon, to assume ascendancy above, and to assert authority over. However, it is known that all the attributes of Allāh are eternal, i.e., they have always existed and were present before He created. Thus, it cannot be said that He 'rose' above the Throne, as Allāh has always been ascendant. Because the Creator may not be compared to His creation, the Prophet's companions and early scholars refused speculation as to how His actions could be interpreted, considering any such attempt unlawful. Similarly, the true nature of the Throne is known only to Allāh, the Exalted.)
Footnote 13:2 (2):🅧
For the benefit of mankind.
13:3 | And it is He who spread the earth and placed therein firmly set mountains and rivers; and from all of the fruits He made therein two mates; He causes the night to cover the day. Indeed in that are signs for a people who give thought.
13:4 | And within the land are neighboring plots and gardens of grapevines and crops and palm trees, [growing] several from a root or otherwise, ¹ watered with one water; but We make some of them exceed others in [quality of] fruit. Indeed in that are signs for a people who reason.
Footnote 13:4 (1):🅧
i.e., only one from a root.
13:5 | And if you are astonished, ¹ [O Muḥammad] - then astonishing is their saying, "When we are dust, will we indeed be [brought] into a new creation?" Those are the ones who have disbelieved in their Lord, and those will have shackles ² upon their necks, and those are the companions of the Fire; they will abide therein eternally.
Footnote 13:5 (1):🅧
At those who deny resurrection.
Footnote 13:5 (2):🅧
Iron collars to which their hands are chained.
